It may only apply to trace amounts of water, but it should be able to deliver water to the earth as quickly as possible. According to a new paper, scientists have figured out how to heat about one billionth of a liter of water to 600 degrees at a fraction of a trillionth of a second.
Their idea is short-term terahertz radiation, a strong explosion, which is an electromagnetic wave belonging to the wavelength between microwave and infrared light. For less than a millisecond, the water should remain at its original density before the molecules fly apart. According to DESY, the German research group in which the water heating technology was developed, at that time, scientists should be able to record any chemical reactions that might try to trigger an intense thermal reaction.
The researchers pointed out that a team of three people did not apply their own methods to testing. A paper they just published described their ideas in the Journal of Applied Chemistry International. This method should enable physicists to do experiments related to thermal reactions, such as how to trigger the recombination of molecules based on DESY to form new substances.
In order to record such a small and rapid response, researchers will need ultra-short X-rays. The DESY family in Hamburg, Germany will provide this facility. The European X-ray free electron laser facility is under construction, and the X-ray flash that will be established is short enough to record the different stages of the chemical reaction. The company’s board of directors expects the facility to be ready in 2015.
