Four Major Oil Companies Join Forces to Prevent Oil Leaks and Create a Quick Degreasing System

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has strengthened the determination of the U.S. government to limit deep-sea oil and gas development. Major oil companies are trying to make US politicians “returning from their hearts” and actually acting after “word threats”. On July 21, the top three US oil companies, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips, together with the high-profile announcement of Dutch Shell Petroleum, announced that four companies will contribute US$1 billion to create a quick degreasing. The system is used to handle possible oil spill accidents in the deepwater drilling area in the Gulf of Mexico in the future.

It is reported that the four oil companies will form a joint venture dedicated to the design, construction and operation of a fast degreasing system capable of operating in a 10,000-foot deep sea area, enabling it to be quickly started within 24 hours, captured and suppressed daily. 100,000 barrels of oil spills. The design and construction of the system will be led by ExxonMobil. The troubled BP was not invited to join the conglomerate. ExxonMobil CEO Tillerson explained that "we don't want to distract them."

ExxonMobil said that the project will be completed within 18 months. The primary purpose is to prevent oil from entering the ocean in the event of a catastrophic accident on the drilling platform. However, this system will be open to all companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico, including BP.

As a zero-profit project, $1 billion is not a small number. Allegedly in the coming years, the maintenance, upgrading and recruitment of employees may still cost billions of dollars. The huge investment has shown to the U.S. government that the oil companies have the determination and ability to ensure the safety of deep-sea oil recovery.

At present, the oil resources on the land are becoming increasingly tense. Almost all oil companies have begun to look toward the deep sea. Kevin Booker, an analyst at ClearView Energy, an American energy consultancy, pointed out sharply: “Everyone understands that the future belongs to deep-sea oil. If you still want to continue operations, oil companies must convince the government that they have the ability to solve security problems.”

In fact, similar projects have precedents in the United States. In 1989, an Exxon oil tanker hit a reef in the Gulf of Alaska and tens of thousands of tons of crude oil flowed into the sea, causing 1,500 miles of coastline to be heavily contaminated. This was the most serious oil spill in the history of the United States before the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. At that time, many oil companies and Exxon stood together and set up a similar oil spill emergency treatment company. Most of the company’s equipment is now being sent to the Gulf of Mexico. However, the nature of the two oil spill incidents is completely different. It is difficult to predict the effect of this “repeated reenactment”.

The government officials affirmed the actions of the oil giants but also put forward more demands. Edward Mackey, chairman of the House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee, commented that the four companies have taken a "positive step," but they should "pay more attention to how to prevent the deadly explosion."
